Course Description:

Inspiration is a direct consequence of living life with a camera in your hands. When you have a button under your finger that can take a moment and freeze it for a hundred years or more, you’ll find yourself seeing beauty in even the most forgettable moments. It is our decision what medium we choose to remember our lives.

We practically live in the future, being able to see and perfect an image only seconds after we take it, and then send it out to literally thousands of people at once. It’s an unbelievable opportunity that I’m glad I can be a part of, but…

…what happens when we take the batteries out? What happens when we turn the power off? What happens when we shoot for us, and only those people close enough to touch? Taking a photo for posterity, and for the heritage in your heart. To share something special by opening a box that used to hold shoes, but now holds your whole life as you’ve seen it with your own eyes. To me, this is remarkable. To me, this is worthwhile.

My class is about experimenting with a new medium. It’s about being comfortable with change and uncertainty. It’s about photographing the forgettable moments and finding yourself in the love that you have for others. It’s about taking the unknown, loading it with film and giving inspiration a place to live.

Everyday I look through a viewfinder, and expose life to my film. In this class I will teach you how to do the same.

Topics Covered:

This class is a collaboration with the others in the class. We will make something together through our photos. I will not teach you basic photography. I will teach you in-depth film types, film cameras, and film processing. SLRs, TLRs, Rangefinders, pinholes, half frames, point and shoots, toy cameras and all types of working polaroids. I’ll save you time by telling you which cameras you can use that still have film available.

I will teach you how to process a roll of Black and white film in your kitchen sink.

I’m going to cover the ins, the outs, the ups and downs of finding your favorite mediums to record your greatest triumphs or the most quiet and still parts of your life.

How does the class work?

The class participants and I will be making something through our images collectively that will help uplift and inspire one another, as well as be given an opportunity to uplift lives of humans in other parts of the world.

It makes me happy that I could put this photo into a box at an antique store and most people wouldn’t be able to tell it apart from the other miscellaneous photos in the same box.

Whenever I get a new camera, she is there. “She” is Roosevelt. A green 1960 Mercedes 190b sedan that we picked up on craigslist about 2 years ago.

she’s a family car.

she’s a crib.

she’s a conversation piece.

she’s a beauty.

she’s a sittin there on the street waiting for me to find a fuel pump rebuild kit.

she’s begging me to take her back to the ACE in Palm Springs like I used to.

she’s begging me to fuel her up, grab a friend and head to New Mexico to trade produce for beads and photograph her like she needs to be photographed, painting the desert green, running with the coyotes, sleeping outside of the California smog.

she’s getting tired of sitting on my street being an old camera test subject,

that’s not why she was built.

I was in 1st grade (just like Charliee in this photo that I took at the Kaisers cabin this weekend) when I used to play board games by myself.

I distinctly remember asking anyone and everyone passing by me in the hall ways of our cabin in Lake Arrowhead. “Not right now” was usually the answer, which really turned into “not ever”. I guess no one ever had the time for a “quick” game of Monopoly.

I put Charliee and Jett to bed almost every night that I’m home. Mainly because for years, I didn’t have the chance.

We have a routine.

I get them ice water. Each having their own sippy cup. Charliee’s has Disney Princesses with a pink lid and Jett’s has Disney Cars and a blue lid.

For the last year, every night without fail, I switch the cups.

I try and give the pink one to Jett and Charliee the blue. Jett erupts every night. “no not the PINK ONE!”

Tonight for the first time, I handed them the correct sippy cups and Jett Immediately says, “hey, I want the pink one Dada”.

Then as he laughs at his own wit, he shoves his knees up into his shirt and says “look, I’m Wall-E in a box”. Haha.

This boy is no match for the world.

Everything I post on here is real film,…until now.

This is a Bolex 155 that came to me from a man on eBay

The insides were broken so I took it apart, to fix it. Not to fix it like get it working again, but to make it into what it is today.

Until now this camera wasn’t worth the $38 I spent on it.
